Hyannis, the largest village in the town of Barnstable on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, is shown here in a bird's-eye view, though the record does not give a firm date for it. Through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the village depended on a mix of trades: cranberry growing on the surrounding bogs, fishing and coastal shipping, and a growing summer trade. The railroad, which reached Hyannis in the 1850s, carried Cape goods and visitors toward Boston and Providence, and it helped turn the village into the Cape's main commercial center. Residents of that era would have known Hyannis as the gateway to the outer Cape and as a town whose fortunes rose and fell with the seasons and the cranberry harvest.
