Hyannis, the village at the heart of the town of Barnstable on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, drew its living from the sea and from the railroad that reached it in 1854. Captains and fishermen worked out of its harbor, and coastal shipping gave the village a busy working waterfront. Cranberry growing and fishing shaped the surrounding countryside, while steamers carried passengers and mail between Hyannis, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard across Nantucket Sound. As summer visitors arrived by rail in the decades after the Civil War, the village took on a resort character alongside its older trades, and the bird's-eye view shows a community that depended on its wharves, its depot, and the seasonal trade that followed them.
