Hyannis, on the south shore of Barnstable on Cape Cod, is the place shown here, and this view likely reflects the village in the decades after the railroad reached it in 1854. That line on the Old Colony system made the village the commercial center for a stretch of the Cape, moving cranberries, fish, and farm goods out and bringing summer visitors in. Shops, wharves, and churches clustered near the harbor, and the village's economy leaned on seafaring, fishing, and the growing trade in summer boarding houses and hotels. The mapmaker's record gives little about the exact date, so the best reading of the scene is as a working Cape Cod village at the edge of its resort era.
