Hyannis, in the town of Barnstable on Cape Cod, had become the busiest village on the Cape's south shore by the late nineteenth century, where the railroad and the harbor met. The Cape Cod Railroad reached the village in 1854, carrying mail, passengers, and freight from the mainland, while steamers sailed from the wharves for Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. Fishing, coastal trade, and cranberry bogs in the surrounding towns kept many households at work. Summer visitors were also arriving, and nearby Hyannis Port was growing into a seaside retreat set apart from the working village. Residents would have known the place as a crossroads of Cape commerce and the gateway to the islands.
