Cape Cod in the 1890s was a region of small harbor towns, where fishing, salt works, cranberry bogs, and coastal trade supported most households. The Old Colony Railroad's Cape line had carried passengers and freight from Boston and Plymouth since the 1850s and 1870s, so summer visitors and goods moved more easily than they had earlier in the century. Many towns had lost their whaling and deep-sea shipping trades, and residents turned to cod and mackerel fishing, coastal schooners, and cranberry growing. Village churches, lodges, and town meetings remained the center of civic life, and the summer hotels and cottages that would define the Cape's later reputation were only beginning to appear.
