Nantucket, the island south of Cape Cod, was in the late nineteenth century a town living on the memory of its whaling fleet. The industry had collapsed after the Civil War, and the last Nantucket whaler sailed in 1869, so islanders turned to summer visitors, fishing, and the cranberry bogs. The Great Fire of 1846 had destroyed much of the downtown, and the rebuilt streets were lined with the houses of former whaling captains and merchants. A short railroad reaching out toward Siasconset in 1881 made the island easier to visit from the steamers that docked at the harbor. Residents of the time knew Nantucket as a place of Quaker heritage, maritime pride, and a shrinking year-round population.
