Nantucket and the wider Cape Cod region were in a period of transition in the 1890s. The island's whaling fleet had vanished after the last ship sailed in 1869, so its harbor and wharves had shifted toward coastal trade, fishing, and a growing summer trade. Visitors arrived by steamer from the mainland, and hotels, boarding houses, and cottages were rising along the town's streets and shore. Cape Cod's mainland towns relied on cranberry bogs, salt works, fishing, and shipping, and rail lines linked many of them to Boston and Providence. Islanders of the period often still spoke of their town as a former whaling port, even as its economy depended more on summer visitors and the seasonal rhythm of the water.
