Cape Cod in the decades around 1900 was a region of fishermen, salt-makers, cranberry growers, and small shipping towns that depended on the sea and on the railroad. The Cape Cod Railroad had carried passengers and freight to Provincetown, and the Old Colony line linked Sandwich, Hyannis, and other villages to Boston, which brought summer visitors and new hotels to the shore. Many Cape families still earned their living from cod and mackerel, though the big fishing fleets were shrinking, and cranberry bogs were expanding across the sandy low ground. Towns such as Falmouth, Barnstable, and Wellfleet were governed by town meetings, and their harbors, wharves, and main streets were the center of civic and social life.
