Cape Cod, Massachusetts, a hook of sand and pine reaching into the Atlantic, lived mostly from the sea and the land in the decades after the Civil War. Cod and mackerel fishing, salt works, and coastal shipping supported towns from Sandwich to Provincetown, while the whaling trade that had once made captains rich was by then a memory in most harbors. Railroad lines reached the Cape in the 1850s and 1870s, carrying summer visitors and mail, and cranberry bogs spread through the low, wet hollows between the dunes. Residents of these villages would have known the peninsula less for grand architecture than for its lighthouses, its fishing fleets, and the seasonal rhythm of visitors arriving by train.
