Cape Cod in the decades around 1900 was a region of small fishing and farming towns whose livelihoods depended on the sea and the land. Cod and mackerel fishing, salt making, and cranberry growing on sandy bogs sustained many households, while the whaling trade that had once made towns like Provincetown and Nantucket prosperous had largely faded. Railroad lines pushed onto the peninsula in the 1850s and later brought summer visitors who came to stay in hotels and boarding houses, changing the local economy. Towns were governed through annual town meetings, and churches, lodges, and fraternal societies gave residents their social life. A bird's-eye view like this one would have shown the coast to people who knew it as home, as a source of work, and increasingly as a destination.
