Nantucket, Massachusetts, in the decades after the Civil War was a town adjusting to the decline of its whaling fortunes. The island's fleet had shrunk for years, and the last Nantucket whaler sailed in 1869, leaving ship chandlers, sailmakers, and counting-house merchants looking for other work. Summer visitors and steamboat connections to the mainland gradually filled the gap, and the island's gray-shingled houses and older streets drew people who came to rest by the sea. The Great Fire of 1846 had already reshaped the downtown, so the town shown here was partly rebuilt, with civic life centered on its churches, schools, and harbor, where ferries and fishing boats came and went.
