Cape Cod in Massachusetts around 1894 was a place of working harbors and seasonal rhythms. Cranberry bogs, salt works, and the inshore fishing fleet supported many households, and the railroad had carried freight and passengers down the peninsula for roughly four decades. Provincetown and the other outer-Cape towns depended on fishing and coastal trade, while the whaling era was a memory that older residents still recalled. Summer visitors were beginning to fill hotels and boarding houses each season, adding a new source of income alongside the traditional trades. Residents would have known the Cape as a land of sea, sand, and cranberries, shaped as much by the tides as by the calendar.
