In the mid-1890s, the Cape Cod region of southeastern Massachusetts was a place of salt marsh, sandy roads, and small harbor villages whose livelihoods rested on the sea and the land. Fishing fleets worked out of ports such as Provincetown, and coastal schooners carried freight along the shore. Inland, families tended cranberry bogs, and the railroad had by then linked many Cape towns to Boston and Providence, bringing mail, goods, and a growing number of summer visitors. Those visitors were beginning to fill boarding houses and seaside hotels, changing the rhythm of towns that had long depended on fishing and farming. Residents of the period would have known the Cape as a working coast first and a resort district second.
