Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in the decades around 1900 was a community of fishing villages, salt works, and farms, with cranberry bogs becoming an important source of income. The Cape Cod Branch of the Old Colony Railroad, which reached Hyannis in the 1850s, connected the peninsula to Boston and Plymouth, bringing freight and a growing number of summer visitors to towns that had long depended on coastal shipping. Many village streets were still lined with the houses of sea captains from the whaling and coastal trade era, a reminder of how much the region's wealth had once rested on the ocean. Residents knew the Cape as a seafaring and farming place that was slowly becoming a summer destination, a change that quickened as rail travel made the peninsula easier to reach.
