The record for this bird's-eye view does not give a firm date, so this sheet best reflects Cape Cod and eastern Massachusetts in the decades from the 1870s through the early 1900s. Fishing, salt making, and cranberry growing supported many Cape towns, while the coming of rail lines, including the Cape Cod Railroad's extension to Provincetown in 1873, brought freight and a growing number of summer visitors. Former whaling and shipbuilding ports along the bay and Atlantic shore still carried a maritime identity, and town meetings and local churches remained central to civic life. Residents of the era would have known the peninsula first as a working coastline of harbors, wharves, and sandy roads, with the sea shaping nearly every livelihood.
