Falmouth, on the southwestern tip of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, was a town of fishermen, farmers, and coastal traders in the late nineteenth century. Cranberry bogs and the shellfish and fishing trades supported many families, and the seafaring habits of earlier generations, when local men had sailed on whaleships, still shaped the waterfront. The railroad extension to Woods Hole in 1872 linked the village to Boston and New Bedford by rail and steamer, and it drew summer visitors who built boarding houses and cottages along the shore. Residents would have known the town as a departure point for the Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket steamers and as a quiet summer retreat during the years when the Cape's resort trade was growing.
