Cape Cod in the decades around 1900 was a place of sandy soil, shallow harbors, and a economy split between the sea and the land. Fishing fleets worked out of Provincetown and the Cape's other harbors, while cranberry growers along the bogs of Plymouth and Barnstable counties shipped their crop by rail. The Old Colony Railroad's Cape branches, which reached Provincetown in 1873, had brought summer visitors to hotels and boarding houses on the Cape's shore towns. Shipping through the Cape's narrow waters was hazardous, and the Cape Cod Canal, begun in the 1900s and opened in 1914, was built to spare vessels the long, dangerous trip around the peninsula.
