Falmouth, on the southwestern shore of Cape Cod, was a town of farms, fishing boats, and coastal trade in the late 1800s. Its villages drew different crowds: Woods Hole had become a center of marine science after the Marine Biological Laboratory opened there in 1888, while the town's inland roads carried cranberry growers, cattle, and salt hay to market. Summer visitors were beginning to arrive by rail and steamer, filling boardinghouses and small hotels along the shore. Cape residents of that time knew their home by its harbors, its sandy roads, and the steady pull of the sea. A bird's-eye view like this one shows how the village streets, wharves, and church steeples sat between the water and the open moors.
