Falmouth, on the southwest corner of Cape Cod, was a town of fishermen, salt-marsh farmers, and cranberry growers in the late nineteenth century, with livelihoods tied to Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound. The Cape Cod Branch of the Old Colony Railroad reached the town in 1872, and a connecting line to Woods Hole and its steamer wharves brought summer visitors who filled boarding houses and hotels along the shore. Woods Hole, a short distance away, was gaining a reputation for fisheries research after the Marine Biological Laboratory opened there in 1888, drawing scientists to the harbor. Residents would have known Falmouth as a seaside community where the railroad, the bay, and the bogs shaped daily life, and where the summer season was beginning to rival fishing in importance.
