Duxbury, Massachusetts, on the shore of Duxbury Bay in Plymouth County, was a small town in the early 1890s, when this bird's-eye view was drawn. Its livelihood still rested largely on the water and on the land: fishing and coastal trade, with farming on the uplands and a long seafaring tradition that had produced local shipbuilding and sea captains. Residents also knew the town for its connection to Myles Standish, the Plymouth Colony military leader who settled here in the 1600s, and that link to the Pilgrim past was a source of local pride. The view shows the village laid out around the harbor and its streets, a reminder of how closely the community was tied to the bay that shaped its work and its growth.
