Duxbury, on Massachusetts Bay's South Shore in Plymouth County, is the town shown here, and this view reflects its late nineteenth-century character. Settled in the 1630s as part of the Plymouth Colony, Duxbury had long relied on farming, fishing, and coastal trade, with shipbuilding and seafaring tying its harbor families to ports up and down the coast. By this period, its bayside neighborhoods and summer-season visitors were beginning to shape the local economy alongside the older maritime trades. The town's connection to Myles Standish, the colony's military leader who settled there, was a point of local pride, and the Standish Monument on Captain's Hill, dedicated in 1872, gave residents and visitors a visible reminder of that heritage.
