Duxbury, on the South Shore of Massachusetts, was a town of farms, fishermen, and sea captains in the 1890s, with its livelihood tied to Duxbury Bay and the Atlantic. Its harbor had long supported fishing and coastal trade, and the town's shipbuilding and maritime history reached back to the colonial era, when Myles Standish settled there after the Mayflower landing. By the late nineteenth century, rail links to the wider South Shore were bringing summer visitors to its beaches and shore cottages, so the village was changing from a working coastal town into a place of seasonal residence. Residents of the period would have known Duxbury first for its Pilgrim connections, its Captain's Hill monument to Standish, and the sea that shaped both its work and its summers.
