Falmouth, Massachusetts, in 1893 was a town at the southwestern tip of Cape Cod that lived on several economies at once. Its old whaling and coastal trade had faded, and summer visitors, who arrived by the Old Colony Railroad and by steamer from Boston and New Bedford, were becoming a major source of income. Cranberry growing, fishing, and farming still ran alongside the boarding houses and seaside cottages. Nearby Woods Hole had become a center for ocean science and a departure point for steamers to the islands, which tied the town's fortunes to both the water and the rail line. Town meetings and local churches remained central to civic life, and residents would have known Falmouth as a quiet coastal community that was slowly turning toward the summer trade.
