Duxbury, Massachusetts, as this bird's-eye view presents it around 1893, was a small seaside town on Duxbury Bay in Plymouth County, south of Boston. Its older economy rested on fishing, coastal trade, and shipbuilding, while many residents farmed the uplands behind the harbor. By the 1890s, summer visitors were also arriving for the bay and beaches, giving the shore houses a more genteel look. The town's best-known landmark was the granite Myles Standish monument on Captain's Hill, honoring the Plymouth colonist who had settled there in the 1600s, and residents took pride in that Pilgrim connection. A rail link carried passengers and freight, but the town remained far smaller than the mill cities inland.
