Cape Cod, Massachusetts, around the turn of the twentieth century was a peninsula caught between its old seafaring habits and a growing summer trade. Cod and mackerel fishing had declined from the schooner and whaling days, so many households on the Outer and Lower Cape turned to cranberry bogs, salt hay, and shellfish beds for income. The railroad that reached Hyannis in 1854 had already made the Cape easier to reach, and by the 1900s hotels and cottages in Falmouth, Hyannis, and Provincetown drew visitors arriving by train and steamboat. Residents knew the region for its sand roads, its lighthouses, and villages where many of the houses had been built by sea captains.
