Chatham, on the elbow of Cape Cod, looked to the sea around the late 1880s and 1890s, when its economy still rested on fishing, coastal trade, and the many seafaring families who had long sent men to sea. The arrival of the railroad at Chatham in 1887 linked the town to Boston and Providence and began to bring summer visitors who wanted the bayside beaches and quiet inns. Fishing boats worked the offshore grounds while shoals around Monomoy and the outer beaches kept wrecks and rescues in local memory. Residents would have known Chatham as a sea town of captains, fishermen, and cottage-lined streets that was slowly becoming a resort.
