Chatham sits at the elbow of Cape Cod in Barnstable County, and this bird's-eye view shows a town whose living had long depended on the water. By the early twentieth century, the older trades of cod fishing, coastal schooner traffic, and salt making had shrunk, while the railroad that reached Chatham in 1887 brought summer visitors from Boston and other cities. Cottages and boarding houses were becoming nearly as important to local income as the wharves and fishing gear along the harbor. Year-round residents still knew the town by its lighthouse, its outer beaches, and the shoals offshore that had wrecked many vessels. The map records that mix of working harbor and emerging resort town.
