Chatham, on the elbow of Cape Cod in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, was a seafaring town in the late nineteenth century, when its economy rested on cod and mackerel fishing, coastal shipping, and salt works along the harbor. The Cape Cod Railroad reached Chatham in 1887, which opened the village to summer visitors and brought fresh goods and mail more easily than the old stage routes had. Residents knew the town for its treacherous outer bars and the shipwrecks they caused, and the government lifesaving stations along the shore were a familiar part of daily life. Many Chatham men spent long stretches at sea, and families depended on the fishing fleet, the harbor, and the lighthouse on the bluff.
