Chatham, at the elbow of Cape Cod, is the town this view most likely shows, and in the decades around 1900 its economy rested on the sea. Cod and mackerel fishing, coastal shipping, and shipbuilding and seafaring families shaped its waterfront, while the town's men often served on vessels that sailed far beyond the Cape. Cranberry bogs on the sandy uplands were a growing source of income. Rail service that reached the Cape in the 1880s began to bring summer visitors, who joined the town's residents on its beaches and inns. A bird's-eye view like this one would have shown Chatham residents the harbor, the village streets, and the outer barrier beaches they knew well.
