Chatham, on the elbow of Cape Cod, was a fishing and seafaring town around 1893, when this bird's-eye view was drawn. Its harbor and fleet of schooners and dories drew on the cod and mackerel grounds offshore, and many families also worked as coasters, shipbuilders, and keepers of the life-saving stations along the outer beaches. The railroad reached the town in the late 1880s, which brought summer visitors and new hotels to the village and made it easier to ship fish and cranberries to Boston. Residents would have known Chatham for its shifting sandbars, its lighthouse, and the wrecks that tested the local lifesavers, while the older whaling and fishing traditions were giving way to a summer trade.
