Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in the late nineteenth century was a region of small harbor villages, farms, and salt marshes, where most families earned a living from fishing, coasting trade, cranberry cultivation, and seasonal work. Railroads had reached the peninsula by the 1850s and 1870s, carrying summer visitors and freight, and they began to link isolated towns to Boston and Providence. Shipbuilding and whaling had declined from their earlier peaks, leaving many communities turning toward the cranberry bogs and the growing tourist trade. Town meetings still governed local affairs, and churches, schools, and grange halls anchored social life. Residents of this period would have known their towns chiefly through the sea, the bogs, and the arrival of the train.
