Cape Cod in the decades around 1900 was a region of small harbor and village towns whose economies had moved away from the whaling and coastal shipping of earlier generations toward fishing, cranberry growing, salt hay, and a growing trade in summer visitors. The Cape Cod Railroad had reached Hyannis in 1854, linking the peninsula's villages to Boston and Providence and making seasonal stays practical. Within Barnstable County, the town centers clustered white-steepled churches, schools, and general stores near the water, while farms and cranberry bogs spread into the surrounding land. Residents would have known the Cape for its sea captains, its treacherous shoals and sandbars, and the shipwrecks that dotted its outer shore.
