Barnstable, the oldest town on Cape Cod and the seat of Barnstable County, depended on the sea and on the coastal trade that tied the Cape to Boston and New York. Captains, shipwrights, and fishermen shaped its waterfront, and salt making, shipbuilding, and whaling had long been part of local life. Railroads reaching the Cape in the 1840s and 1850s brought summer visitors and new commerce, and the older village of farms, churches, and harbor lanes began to change around them. Residents of the town would have known it as a place where the courthouse, the meetinghouses, and the wharves were the center of public life.
