Cape Cod in the late nineteenth century was a region of small harbor towns whose economies had moved away from the whaling fleets that once sailed from them. Cranberry bogs, salt works, and coastal fishing employed many families, and coasting schooners and shipyards still tied villages such as Barnstable and Dennis to Boston and New York. The railroad that reached Hyannis in 1854 brought the first wave of summer visitors and began to change the pace of towns that had long depended on the sea. Residents of the period knew the Cape for its sea captains' houses, weathered wharves, and a growing summer trade that sat alongside the older work of the water.
