Cape Cod in the decades around 1900 was a region of small towns whose living came from the sea and the land. Fishing crews worked out of Provincetown and other harbors, while cranberry bogs and salt works supplied local income. The railroad had reached Hyannis in 1854, bringing summer visitors and freight into villages that had long depended on coastal trade and the memory of whaling. The Cape Cod Canal, opened in 1914, shortened the sea route around the peninsula and changed how ships and residents thought of the Cape's isolation. People who lived there knew it for sea captains' houses, weathered barns, and a year shaped by tides and harvests.
