John Held Jr., known for his jazz-age cartoons of flappers and college men, turned his pen toward Nantucket in this 1925 color poster for the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad. The railroad promoted summer travel that combined train service with steamer passage to the New England coast and offshore islands. Nantucket, out past Cape Cod in the Atlantic, had long drawn visitors with its whaling past and weathered architecture, and the poster presents the island as a summer destination in keeping with the railroad's appeals.
