Few posters on this board put a harbor at the center rather than a train or depot, and this one makes Nantucket's waterfront its subject. The New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad issued it to promote the island as a summer destination, reached through rail and boat connections from southern New England. In the 1800s Nantucket was one of the busiest whaling ports in the country, and by the mid-twentieth century its reputation had shifted to a quieter resort. The poster plays on that contrast, inviting travelers to a place whose maritime past was still visible along its docks.
