Few theatrical posters of the 1870s pair a railway wreck with acrobatics quite like this one, which advertises the Hanlon brothers' *Le Voyage en Suisse*. The Hanlons, Edinburgh-born performers who built their reputation in Paris, staged fast pantomimes full of stage machinery and gymnastic stunts, and the railway theme let them turn a crash into spectacle. Posters of this kind were usually color lithographs, designed to catch the eye on boulevards and in station halls. The image also draws on real public unease about rail travel, when new lines were still a novelty and accidents made frequent news.
