A promotional poster for the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad's fast seaside express, this piece advertised a train meant to carry summer travelers from the city toward the Atlantic shore. Railroads of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries relied on posters like this to fill cars during the warm months, when city residents looked for cooler air and a few days by the water. Such posters were usually printed in bold lithographic color, and the mix of sea, sky and lettering shows how the railroads sold a holiday as much as a ride.
