The title names two rival lines, the Missouri Pacific and the Atlantic & Pacific, so its call to "GO WEST!" points to particular routes rather than the West in general. Both companies grew out of the postwar push to link the Mississippi valley with the Pacific coast, when railroad promoters competed for land grants, settlers and passengers. Images like this were often used to promote that journey, so it is worth reading the scene as persuasion as much as reportage.
