Unlike the broader Pennsylvania Railroad views on this board, this one shows a station built specifically as an interchange, where passengers and freight could move between the company's main lines and its connecting services in West Philadelphia. In 1902 the Pennsylvania was the largest railroad in the country, and Philadelphia was among its most important hubs, so new facilities on the city's western side reflected the company's effort to handle growing traffic. The station's design and layout show how railroads of the period tried to combine efficient transfers with the grander architecture that signaled their prominence.
