Key West, at the far western end of the Florida Keys, is the place this picture records, and 1912 was a landmark year there. In January of that year the Florida East Coast Railway's Overseas Extension reached the island, ending its long reliance on boats for contact with the mainland. Henry Flagler, the railroad's driving force, had pushed the line across more than 100 miles of open water and coral islands at great cost. The record does not name a photographer, so the view is best read as a document of the town and its new rail connection at that moment.
