The Chicago & North Western passenger terminal, which opened in 1911 on the Canal Street side of the Chicago River, gave the railroad a single large gateway to the city. This 1912 view shows the station only a year after it began service, when commuter and long-distance trains were moving through its train shed. The building was designed by the Chicago firm Frost & Granger in a classical style meant to project the railroad's standing. Photographs like this one record how a major terminal reshaped the daily routines of a growing city.
