Wabash Avenue running north from Adams Street is the particular view here, with the street's downtown canyon of buildings and the traffic moving through it. Chicago's Loop was rebuilt rapidly after the Great Fire of 1871, and streets like Wabash grew into the commercial core of the city, lined with offices, shops and the elevated and streetcar lines that carried workers and shoppers through the district. Pictures of this kind are useful for seeing how the city's downtown looked as its density and transit network expanded, and the rail presence on the board suggests the street's relationship to the trains overhead and nearby.
