Few bridges announce themselves like the Forth Bridge, and this poster makes it the centerpiece of the London and North Eastern Railway's run to Edinburgh. Completed in 1890 across the Firth of Forth at South Queensferry, its steel cantilever spans were the longest of their kind when it opened. By the early 1920s, the Flying Scotsman's northbound passengers crossed over the water on this structure, and Gawthorn's lithograph, printed in York, presents that crossing as a sight of speed and scale worth watching from the window.
