Safety, comfort, economy: those three promises lead this Canadian Pacific Railway poster, which bills the line as the world's greatest travel system. Issued as a color lithograph around 1940 and credited to Norman Fraser, it comes from a period when trains were still a major way to cross North America, and railroads sold themselves on reliability. Canadian Pacific, chartered in 1881 and linked coast to coast in 1885, ran sleeping cars, dining cars and hotels as well as tracks, so its advertising often promised a whole journey rather than just a seat.
