This poster promotes a combined rail and steamer trip: the "boat train" carried passengers from Boston to waiting Eastern Steamship Lines vessels, with the Boston and Maine Railroad providing the connection. Its title, "Sunday - a day on the open sea," points to the leisure cruise as much as the journey itself. Ca. 1925 was a prime period for American travel posters, when railroads and steamship companies used bold color lithography to sell vacations to a growing middle-class public. The design is credited to Charles W. Holmes and printed by the University Press in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
