Ada, a small town in northwestern Minnesota, is the setting for this crowd gathered at the depot to greet William Howard Taft's train. Taft served as president from 1909 to 1913, and whistle-stop appearances like this one were a central part of how he and other politicians reached voters, with the speaker stepping onto a rear platform to address whoever had come out. Railroads then reached nearly every county seat, so a train stop could draw an entire town to one spot. The picture is a useful record of how public life was organized around the depot.
