Express cars like the American Express and Fargo cars shown here were the freight-carrying section of many American passenger trains, hauling packages, valuables and mail on the same schedules as the travelers aboard. The American Express Company dated to 1850, and Wells, Fargo & Company, the firm behind the "Fargo" name, began in 1852, so both were well-established carriers by the time such trains ran. A night run like this one shows how express service kept goods moving across the country after dark, when the cars were lit and the rail yards and depots were busiest.
