Rather than a generic locomotive scene, this color woodcut shows a train on the Mohawk and Hudson Rail Road, which linked Albany and Schenectady in New York. The line's engine, the *DeWitt Clinton*, made its run with passengers in August 1831, and the print presents that trip as the first steam passenger train in America. The image was reproduced around 1870 by the Antique Publishing Co. of Boston from an original painting now held by the Connecticut Historical Society, and it includes historical text identifying several of the riders. The coaches still resemble stagecoach bodies set on rails, a reminder of how early American railroading borrowed from road travel.
